A Local Perspective on the Napa River

Napa Kayak was founded on a simple idea: while millions visit Napa Valley for wine, very few experience the river that shaped its history.

Napa kayak guide Justin Perkins was raised in Napa Valley and has spent more than 30 years exploring its trails, waterways, and hidden corners. Long before downtown redevelopment and riverfront revitalization, Justin was hiking local hillsides, paddling the Napa River, and studying the stories that define the region.

That lifelong connection became the foundation of Napa Kayak — a locally owned kayak and paddleboard company focused on authentic river experiences, ecology, and Napa’s living history.

We don’t just rent kayaks.
We help people understand the landscape they’re moving through.

More Than a Rental — A Guided Napa River Experience

The Napa River is one of Northern California’s most overlooked waterways. It is tidal, historic, and ecologically unique.

Our guided experiences blend:

  • Napa River history and waterfront storytelling

  • Local wildlife and estuary ecology

  • Responsible paddling education

  • Small-group safety-focused leadership

Whether you’re joining a Napa River History Kayak Tour or renting equipment for a self-guided paddle, Napa Kayak is built around professionalism, preparation, and local knowledge.

Professional Safety Training & Certifications

Safety on the water is never an afterthought.

Founder and lead guide Justin Perkins holds nationally recognized paddlesports and emergency response certifications, including:

  • American Canoe Association (ACA) Paddlesports Safety Certification

  • ACA Level 1 & 2 Kayak Trip Leader Training

  • CPR / AED / First Aid Certified (Adult, Child, Infant, Choking)

  • AED & Universal Precautions Training

  • 30+ years of local Napa River experience

All training aligns with ACA standards and current ECC/ILCOR and AHA emergency response guidelines.

Structured risk assessment, professional instruction, and calm leadership are core to every outing.

A Commitment to Napa

As a locally owned downtown operator, Napa Kayak supports:

  • Responsible tourism

  • Environmental stewardship

  • Positive partnerships within the Napa community

  • Safe, accessible outdoor recreation

Our mission is to provide professional, memorable river experiences while respecting the ecosystem and the community that surrounds it.

Why Paddle the Napa River?

Because when you slow down, the river reveals what the road never does.

You’ll notice:

  • Herons and egrets along the marsh edges

  • Tidal shifts that shape the estuary

  • Historic riverfront buildings from a new vantage point

  • The quiet rhythm of Napa beyond the tasting rooms

Paddling reconnects people to place.

And in Napa Valley, that place begins with the river.
