The Napa River Experience

Our guided Napa kayak tours take place on the calm, scenic Napa River — a tidal waterway that winds through downtown Napa and into the surrounding estuary.

We provide stable, beginner-friendly kayaks designed for comfort and safety. Each kayak includes:

  • U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket (PFD)

  • Paddle

  • Built-in water bottle holder

  • Small storage compartment

Most guests are first-time paddlers. No prior kayaking experience is required.

Every group is different, and we adapt the pace to match the comfort level of participants. More experienced paddlers may move ahead with prior agreement to regroup at designated points.

Our guiding philosophy is simple:

Nobody gets left behind.

Guests who prefer a relaxed pace can enjoy insights about Napa River wildlife, local history, and the ecology of this unique tidal system. Those seeking a slightly more active paddle can explore further stretches of the river under guidance.

The Napa River History Tour is approximately 1.5–2 hours long. During the final portion, guests may:

  • Continue exploring at their own pace, or

  • Return to the dock when ready

Our goal is to provide a safe, organized, and memorable Napa kayak experience for every participant.

What to Wear for Your Napa Kayak Tour

Weather in Napa Valley can shift throughout the day. We recommend dressing in layers.

Suggested clothing:

  • Comfortable shoes that may get wet

  • Shorts or lightweight pants

  • Long-sleeve shirt for sun protection

  • Light jacket or wind layer

  • Hat (sun hat in warm weather, beanie in cooler months)

  • Optional gloves for comfort in colder conditions

Technical kayaking clothing is not required, though it may enhance comfort for frequent paddlers.

Will I Get Wet Kayaking?

You should expect minor splashes during your paddle.

Napa Kayak provides a pre-launch briefing and helps guests enter and exit using the method appropriate for the confirmed departure point and current conditions.

Our equipment and launch process are designed to minimize water exposure while maintaining safety.

Should I Bring My Phone?

While many guests like to take photos of the Napa River and downtown waterfront, phones are frequently dropped in the water during kayaking activities.

If you choose to bring your phone, we strongly recommend using a waterproof case and securing it properly. Napa Kayak is not responsible for lost or damaged devices.

Safety & Professional Standards

Napa Kayak operates under structured safety procedures informed by professional training and decades of local experience on the Napa River.

Guests receive:

  • Pre-launch safety briefing

  • Equipment fitting

  • Basic paddling instruction

  • Clear route guidance

  • Ongoing on-water supervision

Safety decisions regarding wind, tide, and river conditions are made conservatively and in the interest of guest well-being.
