The Napa River History Tour is a guided kayak experience that explores Napa’s waterfront history, wildlife, and changing river landscape from the water. Founder and lead guide Justin Perkins began developing the tour in January 2013 and welcomed its first guests in May 2013.

Location note: Most Napa Kayak rentals and guided tours depart from Riverside Drive. The Sunset Kayak Tour is the only tour that departs from Main Street Dock.
How the History Tour Began
According to founder Justin Perkins, work on the Napa River History Tour began in January 2013 and the first guests joined him in May of that year. Justin developed the experience around two things he knew well: guiding people outdoors and explaining Napa through stories connected to the river.
Archived Travelzoo records independently identify Enjoy Napa Valley—the former name of Napa Kayak—as the operator of a “Napa River: History Kayak Tour” by October 2014. The original Travelzoo deal described guided Napa Valley history and wildlife interpretation. Public guest reviews then document Justin leading the history-and-wildlife experience by October 2015, and the original version of this article was published in March 2016.
Those records support the tour’s long operating history without relying on unsupported labels or awards. Napa Kayak describes the January and May 2013 dates as founder-supplied company history.

This is not a museum lecture transferred into a kayak. Justin uses what guests can see from the river to explain how Napa’s waterfront, downtown, wildlife habitat, transportation, settlement, and wine-country identity developed together. Private and group History Tours are available for groups of up to 12. Advance reservations are recommended, particularly for families, private groups, weekends, and busier travel periods.
